Three short movements. The first is fast and rhythmic, the second more
introvert and the third alternates between energetic, fast music and
freer, slower material.

Three
Hymn Preludes for Organ.
These short pieces are in the style of chorale preludes. The first is a
lilting version of The King of Love, the second is gentle and uses the
melody of Now The Day is Over and the final one is a rousing version of O
Worship The King. They can be used either as concert pieces or separately
in a service.

Evocation for Flute and Harp
A very free sounding single movement which, although generally slow and
introspective is interspersed with more agitated sections culminating in a
broad climax followed by a quiet coda.

Capriccio
for Solo Clarinet
A short single movement opening with a dramatic gesture followed
by fast playful music. The slower central section is more gentle
leading to a return to the opening fast music.

Plaint
A single movement work which explores both the accusative and the lamentation
connotations of the title. This work is on the Contemporary British

Passacaglia
for Trumpet and String Quartet.
A single movement work in which the trumpet and quartet
initially oppose each other but gradually move towards a
series of dialogues. Much of the piece is based on a recurring chord
sequence hence the passacaglia title.

Sonata for Euphonium
A single movement which displays many characteristic features of the
euphonium. It has been described by Steven Mead, for whom it was written, as
"a classic in the euphonium repertoire".

A short movement written for a young harp playing friend.

Three Epitaphs for Harp
Written in memory of the untimely death of a friend. The three
movements depict aspects of her character and reactions to her death. The
final movement gradually moves toward a positive and an assertive
conclusion.

Phantasy for Harp
This single movement work opens in a very free almost improvisery style
before moving into a more free flowing section. An earlier, rather
sinister motif in the bass begins to dominate and develops into a broad
melody which is combined with the opening material. The piece closes quietly
with references to the opening bars.

Three Temperaments for
Clarsach
Commissioned by Eira Lynn Jones. Each of the movements entitled Dance,
Reflection and Caprice,are like different characters each with their own
distinctive moods.

Violin Sonata
This single movement work opens with a slow cadenza like section for the
violin. This leads directly into the fast, main body of the work followed
by a long coda which begins slowly and gradually gains momentum culminating
in an assertive conclusion.

"When the wind blows"
This work was performed in the final of the UK and Eire Composition
Platform and was subsequently recorded on the Inscapes CD (see CD
page). It is a single movement and although it has a lullaby quality it
also has a rather dark undertone. The work closes with a musical echo of
the slightly sinister "rock a bye baby" lullaby.

Scena for String Quartet
This single movement work was awarded the first prize in the
international "In Memorium Zoltan Kodaly Composition
Competition" in 2002. The piece was first performed by the Bartok
Quartet in Budapest.

Suite for Flute, Viola and
Harp
This was commissioned by the Wakeford Trio and consists of four short,
contrasting movements. The first three all end quietly while the final
movement rounds off the suite with a positive, assertive conclusion.

Four Vignettes
The fanfare like opening movement is followed by a mercurial scherzo, a
slow, dramatic third movement and a fast, energetic finale.

Tableau
Written for the same combination of instruments as Messiaen's "Quatuor
pour la fin du temps", Tableau is a little "scene" or a
musical discussion between the players alternating forceful interruptions
with moments of calm.

aggressive sections.
